Navigating Right to Choose for ADHD Assessments in England: A Step-by-Step Guide for Adults and Children

ree

Navigating the assessment process for ADHD can feel overwhelming, particularly in today's busy (and highly complex) healthcare system. I work in the system (MA Social Work student researcher- hello!) and me and my colleagues are forever getting training, updates and info on how to navigate the system ourselves... honestly, they don't make it easy friend- so please don't be hard on yourself for finding it difficult.

Fortunately, England's Right to Choose policy is designed to empower patients, offering the option to select various providers for their ADHD assessments. This comprehensive guide will outline a clear, step-by-step process for both adults and children seeking an ADHD assessment, making your journey smoother and more informed.

Understanding Right to Choose

The Right to Choose policy allows individuals to determine where they receive specific healthcare services, including mental health assessments for ADHD. This initiative is crucial as it provides access to multiple private and NHS providers.

Step 1: Recognizing the Signs of ADHD

The initial step in seeking an assessment is identifying potential ADHD symptoms. These often include issues with attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.

  • For Children: Signs may be evident in school, where a child struggles to complete assignments, has difficulty following instructions, or has a hard time interacting with peers. For instance, children with ADHD may score 20% lower on average in standardized testing compared to their peers.

  • For Adults: They might face challenges managing their time, maintaining focus at work, or handling family responsibilities. According to recent studies, adults with ADHD are 50% more likely to experience job instability compared to those without the condition.

Discussing these symptoms openly can provide valuable perspectives. Involving teachers or close friends might help gain additional insights. For an official ADHD pre-assessment form that will help you to understand and recognise the signs in yourself, or your child , click here.

Step 2: Consulting with Your GP

Once you've recognized potential symptoms, the next step is to schedule an appointment with your General Practitioner (GP).

During this meeting, clearly share your concerns about ADHD symptoms. A preliminary assessment will be conducted, where your GP may ask a series of questions to understand your situation better. They will also ask you to complete a pre-assessment form.

After discussing your concerns, the GP can provide support and, if necessary, a referral for a formal ADHD assessment under the Right to Choose policy.

FOR CHILDREN: your GP and school must agree that your child meets pre-assessment criteria in order to be referred for an assessment. Your school will be asked to create a report explaining why they think your child meets criteria. You will be asked to a meeting with the school for this.

Step 3: Obtaining a Referral

Once your GP confirms that an assessment is needed, they will issue an NHS referral.

It's vital to remind your GP that you wish to utilize the Right to Choose policy. Doing so allows you the flexibility to select from various providers, tailored to your needs.

The referral will include pertinent medical history and notes about your symptoms, which aids the clinicians in grasping your circumstances.

Step 4: Choosing Your Provider

With the referral in hand, your next step is selecting your assessment provider.

Using the ADHD UK, you can find a list of approved providers for ADHD assessments. Research each provider thoroughly, taking into account:

  • Location: A nearby facility can simplify travel logistics.

  • Reviews: Look for patient feedback, as positive experiences often indicate quality care.

  • Wait times: These are generally kept up to date, but please double-check with the provider when you contact them, as wait times change constantly!

  • Medication: If you wish to try medication, it is absolutely essential that you choose a provider that offers 'Titration' (this is what the medication process is called).

For children, ensure the provider has a track record of working with young patients. An experienced clinician can adapt their approach significantly when working with children compared to adults.

Step 5: Contacting Your Chosen Provider

Once you've chosen your provider, it is time to reach out.

You can call or fill out an online form to schedule your ADHD assessment appointment. The details will be available on their website- as stated before, please communicate with them to double check wait list times.

The chosen provider will walk you through the subsequent steps, including any required pre-assessment questionnaires or background information. During this stage it is very important that you ask for confirmation of your place on the wait list.

Step 6: The Assessment Process

During the ADHD assessment, anticipate a thorough evaluation. It is natural to feel nervous and many experience self-doubt and imposter syndrome leading up to their assessment. If you require any support with this, please do not hesitate to reach out for support here.

The assessment will consist of interviews, questionnaires, and consultations with family members or teachers (for children).

The outcome will typically include various testing methods. Depending on the results, the clinician will offer recommendations for supportive treatments or strategies to manage your ADHD effectively. You will also be told which type of ADHD you have.

Step 7: Receiving Your Diagnosis and Support

After the assessment, you'll receive the results.

If diagnosed with ADHD, the clinician will discuss treatment options, which may involve therapy, lifestyle changes, or medication. For children, there may also be advice on collaborating with schools to accommodate their needs effectively. Research suggests that tailored school support can improve educational outcomes for students with ADHD by 30%.

Support is vital since ADHD can impact many aspects of life. Implementing personalized strategies can lead to significant improvements in daily functioning and well-being.
